Visiting The Dentist – What to expect?
The first thing you want to make sure of is that you are visiting a dentist with you are comfortable with. If you’ve never been to the dentist before, or in a very long time, just choose one close by and make an appointment for a basic checkup. You never have to have any procedure performed if you don’t feel comfortable. Meet with your dentist and see if you like him/her. The dentist will do a quick and totally pain-free examination of your teeth to see what work needs to be done.
Most checkups will include a complete cleaning in which they will use some special tools to remove any built up plaque and tatar which can cause all sorts of problems. They may also polish your teeth. Don’t worry, this process is also painless and when you walk our of there you’ll be surprised at how good your teeth feel!
Ask any questions you like while you’re there and when you are told of any work that needs to be performed, if you feel ready then you can have the Dentist commence that work then and there or alternatively schedule a new appointment for a later time.
Depending on the symptoms you have or what the dentist has seen you may be encourage to have an x-ray performed to identify what needs to be done. Modern dental offices use x-ray machine that emit a very tiny amount of radiation so don’t worry. It’s about the same amount as you would receive from a day sitting in front of a computer monitor.
You should ideally have a dental checkup like this every 6 months and make sure to let your dentist know if anything is bothering you.
